Archaeopteryx Archaeopteryx Skeleton

Archaeopteryx is the oldest known Bird, and is from the Late Jurassic Period. He fluttered around between 144 and 163 million years ago. The fossil of this ancient creature was found in mud deposits in a lake, in Bavaria.

It was about the size of a medium to large chicken, but unlike a chicken, it had well formed wings, so it could fly. However, it probably wasn't a very graceful flyer, and may have looked a little silly. Unlike most modern birds (though not all), the Archaeopteryx had teeth. He had a long tail and his feet had 3 claws on them (making them very bird like indeed).
